Topic sentence: Relationship with his father
Paragraph One
Christophers relationship with his father:
Christopher Boone literally dislikes his father, he mentioned that was able to pull out his Swiss knife on people even on his father because his father. His father often explains his thoughts extreme way what was frightening for Christopher. Demonstrating his emotions, occasionally blowing up in anger, and he lacks the confidence to work through his problems verbally. Christopher felt emotionally devastated by his father. On the other hand Chriss father Ed Boone certainly cares for Christopher He carefully prepares all of Christopher’s meals according to Christopher’s rigid list of likes and dislikes, but he also becomes angry with Christopher when Christopher misunderstands him and this is the biggest problem between each other, they do not understand each other's feeling and thoughts. Ed usually gets angry when he is not able fully understand Christopher's likes, dislikes and problems. But on the other hand he is intensely protective and pay attention for Chris´s security, this way he tried to cut out Christopher's mother but what I found eventually It all went right and after Christopher's rat (Toby) death Ed bought him a puppy.
Christopher mentioned his father in chapter 31.
When he describes his arriving at the police station and Chris heard him shouting on policeman. Then they have conversation about his mention to hit policeman.
Ed Boone is mentioned also in chapter 43.
When Chris arrives form school and mentions when his father arrived home. They were having quick conversation about his mother. Then he left for 2 and ½ hours.
As a 3rd mention of Ed I picked up a chapter 149 where his father Ed most of the time seems really sweet to Christopher the way how he asks his son what he feels like eating for dinner and tells him his favorite program is on TV is a proof that even he gets anngry and He grabs him or shows his anger he likes him and he wants to protect him. Many time when I was reading this book I felt on the one hand mad with Ed Boone but on the other hand in different time I kinda felt sorry for him because it was hard for both, him but harder for Christopher Boone.
The Novel The Curious Incident of a Dog in the Nighttime is centered around the relationship of a young boy with Asperger's Syndrome and his even evolving relationship with his father.
ReplyDeleteAs the book starts out we can draw a couple conclusions from the first scene involving Christopher Boone and his father. In this scene Christopher had been arrested for assaulting an officer. His father just had bailed him out. The two then shared the ride home discussing the arrest. This dialect displayed some key points to for the readers to draw from. The scene reveals that the relationship is centered around the plethora of love Mr. Boone has for his son. The authors wants his audience to comprehend that Mr. Boone just wants to protect his son. But Christopher is a curious young boy that does not know any better than to pursue want he is passionate about with no worries about the repercussions he could have. Mr. Boone’s character develops in this scene, expressing his anger about Christopher’s stubbornness. As the plot continues the reader sees that Christopher’s dad is very upset about Christopher's idea to be seek more information about the dog’s death. The reader can then infer that down the road Christopher’s father will become very angry when he catches his son disobeying him.
The second scene starts out in the home of the Boones with Christopher’s dad sitting on the couch. Then the author reveals to the audience that Mr. Boone is also a very sensitive man. Christopher enters the room and sees that his dad is crying. Christopher asks his dad if he is crying about the death of the neighbors dog. Its inferred that Christopher can not perceive many emotions because his father gives him a very vague answer. The vague answer shows that the father knows the real answer of his tears will only lead to his son asking more questions and confusion. This scenes is very important to the plot because the reader will hold on to this key point that the author just expressed. The reader will keep the sensitivity of the father in mind throughout the novel.
Much further into the novel a great deal happened. Christopher’s father took his journal away from him because of his disobedience. While his father is out of the house Christopher finds his journal along with a lot of letter from his mother. Mr. Boone told Christopher his mother had passed away. The letters directly contradicted his father’s statement. Christopher reads the letters and finds out that his mother is alive and left because of Christopher. Christopher becomes very dizzy and experiences an overload of emotional pain. The reader already knows Christopher can not perceive these emotions because of previous scenes. Then his father enters the scene and the audience feels the pain of both of the characters. This scenes is essential to the plot. Many see this exact scene as the climax of the novel because of its major unveil.
All three of these scenes are very important to the story of the book, expressing to the audience the major revelations, character developments, and key plot points. When the reader analyzes these scenes and the relationship between the father and son, they can understand the author’s literary types.

Junior English
Christopher John Francis Boone has been living along with his father ever since his mom left. His father has been with him through all his struggles and all his success like a good parent should do. Examples from the book are when Christopher is at the police station and his dad comes to get him. (16-17) Another example is when his dad walks in on him reading the letters from his mom. (114) The last example is when his dad tells him he killed Wellington. (121-122) His dad is human and makes mistakes and sometimes can not help but to lie to his son but he is still a good dad for even staying. He is extremely patient and loving, he has the biggest heart in the book.
Mr. Boone loves his son, Christopher, very much and will do anything to help him succeed. The scene at the police station when Mr. Boone gets his son out of jail and they hold up their hands and spread their fingers to make a fan and make their fingers and thumbs touch. This is how Mr. Boone hugs his son because Christopher hates being touched. This talks about there relationship by how much they love each other and how much his father cares about Christopher. The characters become developed in this scene by showing that Mr. Boone has a big heart for Christopher and loves him and how they learned how to deal with each other. This scene moves the plot forward because it shows how Christopher does not like being touched but also how he and his father still love each other.
The next example is when Christopher is reading the letters from his mom and he realizes that his mom is still alive. This causes him to overload and throws up and passes out until his dad comes home and finds him. His dad starts apologizing and saying it was to help Christopher. This reveals that Christopher's father loves him and only wants to make him happy. This develops the characters by Christopher has a coming of age moment and his father respects his son more. This moves the plot forward by Christopher wondering about his mother.
The last example is when Mr. Boone tells Christopher about him killing Wellington. He explains about him and Mrs. Shears and how she left Mr. Boone for the dog. Then Mr. Boone told Christopher about him killing the dog. This reveals that they are having a very rough time in their relationship. This develops Christopher to start coming to age and want to leave his dad. Mr. Boone starts becoming more open with his son. This pushes the plot forward by making Christopher want to leave to find his mom.
This all pushes Christopher and his father's relationship to its max. Christopher still knows his dad loves him and his dad is worried about him. His dad is a good day for still trying and not quitting like his mom making him a good dad.
In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Christopher’s relationship with his dad makes the book that much more interesting. In the beginning of the book, Christopher trusts and loves his father very much. Haddon writes, “He held up his right and spread his fingers out in a fan...We do this because sometimes Father wants to give me a hug, but I do not like hugging people… it means that he loves me”(16). This is showing that at his father wants the best for him and knows how to take care of him very well. He loves his son very much and tries to show it to him in a way that he understands. Later on in the book, Christopher gets into trouble with his father when he was getting involved in other people’s business. Christopher went around what his father asked him to do. Haddon writes, “But father interrupted me and grabbed a hold of my arm really hard. And father had never grabbed hold of me like that before”(82). His relationship with his father has changed because now his father is being more aggressive. Christopher does not like this side of his father because he was always the calm one. His father is being aggressive because Christopher is going around the questions his father asked him to not do. His father believes he is still being nosy. Also, his father does not believe that Christopher is listening to him. Further on from that scene, Christopher felt worse with his father because he lied and he despises when people lie, so he always tells the truth. Haddon writes, “Mother had been alive all the time. And father had lied about this”(112). Christopher felt real sick and basically went into shock because he could not believe that his parents have betrayed him. The relationship between the two of them are very rocky where one wrong step and the whole thing caves in.
ReplyDeleteEach scene develops each character because they are each changing throughout the book. In the beginning scene, his dad was very calm and relaxed and did not worry as much because he knew that Christopher was still naive to the situation with his mom. Christopher trusts and loves his dad because he takes care of him and does things for him. In the middle scene, his dad becomes more aggressive because he is trying really hard to keep Christopher out of trouble and protect him from the real world. Christopher really want to figure out the truth and he believes it is in him or required to find out who killed Wellington. He stretches out his father’s patience by asking many questions to people and avoiding the questions of what his father told him to not do. Christopher is more aware and acts less like a naive child then before when he got in trouble with his dad. He is acting more grown up by going around and asking questions but still naive enough where he does not know limits. In the end scene, his dad tries to protect him from being hurt even more than when he went through wit the fake death of his mother. When Christopher is in shock, his dad tends to his every move in order not to make the situation worse. His father knows that Christopher does not like lying but does it to make Christopher feel better. Christopher can not comprehend why his mother was alive and not dead like his father had said. He zoned out for quite a while and he came back when his father told the truth of killing Wellington. This changed the relationship between the two of them because Christopher feels like he can not trust his dad because if he killed Wellington then his dad could kill him. His dad felt like he completely lost his son because he does not know what to do anymore, making their relationship very unsteady.

ReplyDeleteThe relationship of Christopher, his dad and how it changes throughout the book moves the plot forward because it connects the past and present events. The more severe the scene is with his father, something is revealed inside the book. An example is when his dad finds Christopher with the letters, who killed Wellington is revealed. They both grow throughout the book by becoming more aware on what to do and they both made mistakes that they can learn from. These three scenes of Christopher and his father show situations where they are different from the first scene than on a regular normal day.
A scene in the beginning of the book that shows the relationship between Christopher and his father is when his father arrives at the police station to pick up Christopher after Christopher was arrested for assaulting a police officer. His father greets Christopher by holding out his hand with his fingers outstretched. Christopher does the same in return. This scene reveals that his father understands that Christopher does not liked to be touched. This shows that his father and Christopher understand each other. This works to move the plot forward because it helps to show that Christopher can always count on his father no matter what happens.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, a scene in the middle of the book that shows the relationship between Christopher and his father is when Christopher discovers that his mom is alive and that his father has been hiding this from Christopher. This reveals that Christopher’s father was trying to “protect” Christopher and make decisions for Christopher. This scene develops each character. It develops Christopher because he learns the truth about his mother. It develops Christopher’s father because he becomes humbled and realizes his mistake of hiding something that huge from his son. It works to move the plot forward by integrating Christopher’s mom into the story.
Lastly, a scene at the end of the book that shows the relationship between Christopher and his father is when Christopher brings up Mrs. Shears to his father at the kitchen table. Christopher’s father reacts violently and has a outburst at Christopher just for bringing up her name. This suggests that something has happened in the past between Mrs. Shears and Christopher’s father. Christopher’s father also forbids Christopher from investigating more about Wellington. This scene develops each character because Christopher now must choose between obeying his father and finding out who killed Wellington. This scene works to move the plot forward because it creates an enormous conflict for Christopher.
Christopher is in a tough spot with his father because his dad knows something is up with him and as Christopher continues to probe the wellington incident he gets more and more aggressive and angry.The first time Christopher interacts with his father on the way home it get heated. We do not know much about Christopher's father at this point and we don't know how he will react to this information. His father shouts “ I said Leave it for God’s sake.”(Haddon 21) this quote shows that Christopher's father and get triggered very quickly and very easily as Christopher did not push into the subject very much. As the book progresses on his father gets more and more impatient.
ReplyDeleteThe second time that Christopher and his father get into a big quarrel is after Christopher gets done investigating wellingtons killing. Christopher had gone around to all the neighbors asking them if they had seen anything about wellington or his killer. When he goes to mrs shears house she finds him there and calls his father which leads to his father yelling at him.”What the hell were you doing poking round her garden?” (Haddon 48) His father his angry at him for continuing to investigate wellington so his father seems to be very sensitive about the wellington topic. After this incident there relationship seems to deteriorate more and more.
The third time is a time when Christopher dad isn't yelling at him but is now apologizing because he hid that his mother is still alive and she has been sending him letters but Christopher is not listening to him and feels betrayed because he lied to him so much. “ I did it for your own good, Christopher. Honestly I did. I never meant to lie. I just thought … I thought is was better if you didn't know… that...that....I was going to show them to you when you were older.”(Haddon 114) His father is obviously very sad about lying to Christopher and now he may not trust his father at all. Their relationship has deteriorated to the point where they can't talk anymore.

Christopher’s relationship starts out strong they both love each other. In the beginning his father cares for him and does not fight or yell at Christopher. Here is an example from the scene at the police station that show his dad love and care for christopher. “It was 1:12 a.m. when father arrived at the police station. I did not see him until 1:28 a.m. but I knew he was there because I could hear him”(Haddon 16). His father shows his love by fighting for his son. However, his father starts to develop anger and frustration with Christopher near the middle and end of the book. It moves the book towards Christopher becoming to not trust his father.
Christopher start to not trust his father after he blackout and when he came to his dad had his book in his hands and Christopher had blood coming from his head. This reveals his father getting a little abusive. Christopher then reveals that he still loves his dad but is afraid of him now. “But father interrupted me and grabbed hold of my arm really hard. Father had never grabbed hold of me like that before…. I didn’t like it when people grabbed me so I hit him. I didn’t have memories for a short while. There was blood in my right hand and my head. Father was standing there with my book still in his hand breathing heavily” (Haddon 82-83). This shows how his father has changed a lot because his father never grabbed him like that before. His father is becoming really aggressive. This is only one thing we know about his father and it makes Christopher want to find his book which leads this book on further.
Christopher find a few letters addressed to him hidden in his father’s room. He took one and read it much later and when he read the date on it he got confused about how she mailed something after she died. This will end up losing most of his trust for his dad. “I counted the letters. There were 43 of them. They were all addressed to me in the same handwriting”(Haddon 104). This show how his father has turned into a secretive person who Christopher can not trust. Christopher reads the letters and gets sick from them and ends up asking his dad why he would lie to him about his mother being dead. This is when Christopher learns to not trust his father completely.
The first main scene that encountered the relationship between Chris and his father was at the police station. When Chris got arrested for assaulting a police officer, and then his dad bailed him out. This shows that Chris’s dad has unconditional love for Chris. Because even when he does something wrong or does something his father does not like his father is still there for him to help him out. This creates a more thoughtful Chris and Mr. Boone both learn from the situation and change for the better. This moves the plot forward by Chris’s dad not being happy with Chris when he finds out that Chris is trying to get more info on the death of the dog. Which will then entail Chris’s father getting upset later on in the story when he catches Chris looking for information.
ReplyDeleteOne of the many scenes that showed the relationship between Chris and his father was the scene with the letters from Chris’s mom. This shows a lot of things about there relationship and how it is not as strong as once thought. We find out that Chris’s dad hides the fact of his mother's existence. This also shows that they can’t really trust each other or talk to each other about hard things. This scene changes both of the characters, it makes the dad become more thoughtful and it makes Chris become less trustworthy and broken in a way. This moves the plot forward because Chris just figured out one mystery and now he is determined to figure out the other.
The final event that occurred that involved Chris and his father is towards the end of the story when Christopher's father has a sudden outburst when Chris brings up Mrs. Shears, this lets us infer that Mr. Boone and Mrs. Shears have had some history. This changes the characters by making his dad be more open with him and it changes Chris because he is now angry with his dad and is thinking about leaving. This moves the plot forward because Chris is close to finding who killed the dog, and also wants to go find his mother.
Christopher has an evolving relationship with his father. Throughout the book through their interactions they change. For example when father tells Chris not to investigate the murder of the dog. This reveals that their relationship is very strained because he does not want Chris to find out the truth about his father’s murder of the dog.
ReplyDeleteAnother interaction is when Christopher punches his father. The reason he punched him is because his father grabbed and his asperger's makes him not be liked to be touched. This reveals that their relationship is even farther apart because his father should know from raising him that he should not grab him like that.
Finally, when his father tells him the truth with the letters, their relationship is strained even more but also healed in some ways as his father finally tells him the truth. For example Chris’ father reveals the reason why he told him that his mother had passed away which in a way heals a little. But the straining is on why he continued to keep on a lie about his mother who tried to contact and stay in Chris’ life.

Mr. Boone drinks a little too much sometimes and gets angry with Christopher. Mr. Boone has a hard time expressing his emotions and also gets somewhat aggressive with Christopher. “But Father interrupted me and grabbed hold of my arm really hard. Father had never grabbed hold of me like that before,” (Haddon 82). Mr. Boone also has a hard time explaining himself. He doesn’t like to deal with his problems verbally. “Then he said, ‘I didn’t know what to say...I was in such a mess...She left a note and...Then she rang and...I said she was in hospital because...because I didn’t know how to explain. It was so complicated. So difficult. And I...I said she was in hospital. And I know it wasn’t true. But once I’d said that...I couldn’t...I couldn’t change it. Do you understand...Christopher…? Christopher…? It just...It got out of control and I wish…’” (Haddon 114). However, towards the end of the book, Mr. Boone is more sympathetic towards Christopher because he reveals something really huge. He starts off the chapter politely asking him if he wanted some food and then giving him a bath, and then he tells Christopher the bad news. “And he said, ‘I killed Wellington, Christopher.’” (Haddon 120). Mr. Boone is a trys hard to be a good father, however there are many times he messes up.
Christopher’s relationship with his father is very complex and has many layers to it. When Christopher's father picks him up from jail in the beginning of the book he is someone Christopher is very happy to see. He trusts his father and know his father loves him. When his father tells Christopher that Mr. Shears is a bad man and does not say anything else he becomes very suspicious wondering what he was hiding. When his father comes clean about lying about Christopher's mother’s death and that he killed Wellington Christopher began to fear him. He did trust him anymore because he had lied and was a murderer. I understand why Christopher felt this way the person a person he trust had killed a dog which he valued. He understands logic and the fact is that he had killed a animal. Christopher does not take a look at the emotional side of anything so this reaction was expected. I think that these scenes demonstrate how their relationship changes as the story precedes. How it started out great and then slowly their relationship fell apart. These scenes also demonstrate how their was tension leading up to the climax of Christopher running away from home.

In this scene Christopher attempts to apologize to his Father for what happened trying to explain to him that he did not do it but his father ignored him him. It seemed as if father was very emotional about the dog. It is very obvious that Christopher and his Dad’s relationship is not honest. It is based on a lot of lies and hidden truths. This scene develops both the characters in different ways. For the Father it gets him caught up in more lies and even deeper in trouble and for Christopher it develops his mental capabilities.
The next interaction is when Christopher's dad hits Christopher. In this scene it shows how short tempered Christopher's father is. It is not easy for him to raise Christopher and this is clearly shown in this scene. The two have a very unstable relationship. At this point the father had development a large amount of frustration and does not know how to relieve it. While Christopher became much more confused with a his relationship with his Father.
The final interaction is when Christopher finds his mother letters in his Dad’s closet. This scene shows exactly how much dishonesty is between Christopher and his Father. Not only did Christopher's father tell Christopher that his mother was dead but he hid the letters she had written to him. The little bit of trust these to had has now been shattered by this truth. By finding these letters Christopher and his Father relationship weakness tremendously. Now the father is developing lots of sorrow and remorse for his actions. On the hand Christopher is still trying to comprehend what is going on and if his mother is still alive.
Christopher’s relationship with his father is very complicated as it changes much throughout the book. In the beginning of the story, Christopher relies on his father and trusts him more than anyone else in his life. An example of this is when Christopher explains, “He said that if I needed anything I should call him on his mobile phone” (Haddon 22). This quote shows the strong relationship between Christopher and his father and how dependent Christopher is on his dad. His dad seems to truly care about Christopher and wants to make sure that he is okay. At this point in the book Christopher’s mother was not present in his life so having a strong relationship helped Christopher get through hard times.
ReplyDeleteTowards the middle of the book, Christopher’s relationship with his father seems to change. Christopher starts to question his father and wonder if he is as trustworthy as he thought. An example of when Christopher questions his father is when he says, “Mother had not had a heart attack. Mother had not died. Mother had been alive all the time. And Father had lied about this” (Haddon 112). At this point in the story Christopher was just beginning to question his relationship with his father. He started to feel fear towards his lying father. An example of when Christopher starts to fear his father is when Mr. Boone says, “I killed Wellington, Christopher” (Haddon 120). Christopher’s father revealed this to him in hope to mend their relationship and in hope to regain his trust. However, this caused Christopher to feel extreme fear towards his dad.
At the end of the novel, Christopher feels uncertain towards his father. An example of this is when Mr. Boone says, “Don’t scream, OK, Christopher. I’m not going to hurt you”(Haddon 215). At this point in the story Christopher was unsure if he could trust his dad. This quote shows how his father would have to reassure him that he would not hurt him. This story shows the complicated rollercoasters that some children may experience with their parents.
Christophers relationship with his father changes multiple times throughout the novel the curious incident of the dog in the night-time. In the beginning of the book the main character, christopher a boy with asperger's syndrome, is picked up from the police station by his father. His father is more happy to see his son alive. Christopher does not like being touched by other people. When his father comes to pick him up they spread out there hands and touch fingers. This symbolizes a big hug and christophers dads unconditional love for christopher. This scene helps move them both and they change for the better. Later in the story christopher starts to dig more into the dog’s death. This angers his father and creates a heated tension between the two.
ReplyDeleteThis heated tension between the two only made things worse when christopher found the letter his mom has been sending him. His father has been hiding them from christopher ever since he was a little boy. Christopher's dad was only trying to protect him because he did not want his mother in his life. She abandoned the family when christopher was very young, leaving his father to raise him. His mother had a very short temper and did not want to raise christopher.
One last interaction with christopher and his father is when christopher brings up Mrs. Shears to his father. This makes his father very angry and shows us that there is history between the two. This scene helps develops the father's character as it helps him be more open towards christopher. But this only angers christopher and puts him a weird position. He is now angry with his father and he wants to live with his mother. He is also torn between listen to his father and finding out who killed the dog. This creates a huge internal conflict within christopher.
